How to Read More + Maximize Your Month Link Up

Hey there! We’d like to welcome you to the Maximize Your Month Linkup where we share our goals and motivate one another to pursue our dreams. We’d love for you to a part of our community. Join us by adding a link to your own goals post at the bottom of the post.

Last month I challenged myself to read at least 30 minutes every day (the month before that to drink a gallon of water every day). My goal was to read 36 books this year, but I’ve been falling behind. I met my daily goal for most of the days but didn’t read all 5 days I was in NYC. We had a busy and rough week there after losing our DSLR with all our photos. Once we got home, we immediately had to take Sebastian to the ER and are currently nursing him back to health (force feeding him is no fun). I was hoping to get a lot of reading done this month, but sadly, I’ve done the bare minimum. We’ve been a little too distracted.

How To Read More.

HOW I DID LAST MONTH:

OTHER TIPS ON HOW TO READ MORE:

  • Instead of a time goal, give yourself a page goal per day (ie 10, 20, 50 pages).
  • Always carry a book with you. Chances are there are moments in the day where you are waiting around. Instead of looking at social media, you can take this time to read.
  • To save on costs, check out your local library. If you’re a blogger, there are programs like Blogging for Books or Netgalley where you can get books to read in exchange for a review.
  • Start with an easy read, preferably something hard to put down! Even though you might have this great, thought provoking book you’ve been wanting to read for ages, sometimes it helps going with something easy at first. I read all Susan Ee’s Angelfall series in one week.
  • Join a book club and find some accountability. Also, if you’re on goodreads, let’s be friends! :)

WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS CHALLENGE:

If you’re setting SMART GOALS, you should always be specific and start small, but giving myself a 30 minute reading goal every day made reading much more of a chore to me. Some nights, I would loathe opening a book that I may have otherwise enjoyed reading. I think I tend to feel better about goals where I finish X number of books throughout the month, rather than having the rigidity of having to read every day. On the other hand, while reading wasn’t a pleasure anymore, I did read more books. Is it more important to you to meet your goals or find the process enjoyable?

How to Read More + Monthly Goals.

With everyone back in school feeling all fresh and new, for September’s 30 day goal, I wanted to have a fresh start on my blog. There are always things I want to do to freshen up and improve for Local Adventurer! There are numerous guides out there that I’ve been meaning to check out, like Problogger’s 31 days to a better blog which has been around forever, Joy Cho’s Blog IncBlogger’s Bootcamp, and more. There are so many helpful posts from other bloggers sharing things they’ve learned from trial and error, too.

For a while, I’ve felt so busy trying to keep up with my current editorial calendar, that I didn’t have time on improving anything else. But ultimately, it’s a matter of priorities. I need to make the time to focus on the big picture.

The Specifics:

  1. Make at least one positive change for the blog whether big or small (will be documenting!).
  2. Comment on at least 5 other blogger’s posts per day. Blogging is all about community. The most meaningful thing you can do for a blogger is to respond and comment on their posts. Because it means so much to me, I know it can mean a lot to other bloggers too.
