La Jolla is a great place to go for good food in San Diego! Right around the corner from Whisknladle, their sister restaurant, Catania serves up coastal Italian cuisine. Since San Diego is such a brunch city, we decided to check out their newly launched brunch menu!
The restaurant has a very laid back vibe with seating inside and outside. If the day is nice, which it is most of the time in San Diego, we recommend taking advantage of it. There’s even bar-styled seating outside with the view of the ocean.
Until recently, Catania only had a lunch and dinner menu. When people kept asking for brunch foods, they listened! Everything was well put together, presented beautifully, and was delicious. You can tell that they use fresh ingredients and have come up with some inventive dishes.
If brunch foods aren’t your thing, they still have plenty to choose from. They have small plates, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and pasta to choose from. Everything comes in generous portions and is perfect for sharing so you can try all the different dishes.
what we ordered at CATANIA LA JOLLA:
Cafe Coretto
Bellini (with Blackberry Purée – changes seasonally)
Farro Oatmeal
Polenta Pancakes (Esther’s Favorite)
Arugula and Eggs (Jacob’s Favorite)
Eggs All’ Amatriciana
Lobster Gnocchi (from their dinner menu)
My favorite dish by far was the Polenta Pancakes! If you’re unfamiliar with polenta, it’s a cornmeal-based dish. It was our first time trying them, and it reminded us of the texture of grits (We love our grits since we’re from the south!). There was a perfect balance of sweetness between the pancake and fruits for our palette.
Apparently you can make polenta in your rice cooker too – anyone want to try it with us?
Be sure to catch their brunch menu on the weekends from 10AM-3PM. We definitely have to visit again to try more of their dishes!
