DIY Travel Spice Kit for Foodies or Gourmet Camping Food

Sometimes all you need to step up your food game are some spices. Whether you’re camping and want to take your cooking to the next level, or you just want to add some flavor to your food on the plane or while you’re traveling, this is the perfect DIY! It’s simple and you don’t need a whole lot to make your own DIY Ultralight Travel Spice Kit. We originally found this DIY on instructables, but didn’t like the use of tape and wanted to make our own version of it.

If you’re not into DIYs, you can buy this prepackaged kit, or even this to put in your own spices, but we think this is pretty easy for a DIY.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR YOUR DIY TRAVEL SPICE KIT

STEP 1
Decide which container you want to use. The Altoid Smalls container (fits around 16) is perfect for a bunch of one-time use spices. The Tic Tac box (fits up to 12) is perfect for camping where you can reseal each container after you use what you need.

STEP 2
Cut the straws to the appropriate length for the container.

STEP 3
Grab one end of the straw with the needle nose pliers, and run the flame back and forth a few times until it melts. Wait 8-10 seconds for it to cool down.

STEP 5
Grab the other open end with the needle nose pliers and run the flame back and forth a few times until it’s sealed. Wait 8-10 seconds for it to cool down.

STEP 6 (OPTIONAL)
Label each of your spices so you don’t confuse them when you’re using them.

STEP 7
Load up your container(s) with your spices and get traveling!

  1. I made resealable tubes using straws of slightly different sizes. The smaller diameter straw is the longer piece and holds the seasonings; the larger diameter straw is shorter and forms the cap. I made several sets like this of varying lengths. Some were made to fit inside the Altoids tin, others to fit inside empty prescription bottles. It was a fun project.

    1. That’s a great idea! We’ll have to try it out.

  2. Your idea is really neat. Thank you
