Sometimes all you need to step up your food game are some spices. Whether you’re camping and want to take your cooking to the next level, or you just want to add some flavor to your food on the plane or while you’re traveling, this is the perfect DIY! It’s simple and you don’t need a whole lot to make your own DIY Ultralight Travel Spice Kit. We originally found this DIY on instructables, but didn’t like the use of tape and wanted to make our own version of it.
If you’re not into DIYs, you can buy this prepackaged kit, or even this to put in your own spices, but we think this is pretty easy for a DIY.
WHAT YOU NEED FOR YOUR DIY TRAVEL SPICE KIT
- Clear Straws
- Altoids Smalls Container or Tic Tacs Container
- Scissors
- Needle Nose Pliers
- Lighter (this one keeps you from getting your fingers burnt)
- Funnel or you can make one out of paper like us
- Spices from home. If you don’t have any, here’s a good starter kit.
- Fine Point Sharpie for Labeling (Optional)
STEP 1
Decide which container you want to use. The Altoid Smalls container (fits around 16) is perfect for a bunch of one-time use spices. The Tic Tac box (fits up to 12) is perfect for camping where you can reseal each container after you use what you need.
STEP 2
Cut the straws to the appropriate length for the container.
STEP 3
Grab one end of the straw with the needle nose pliers, and run the flame back and forth a few times until it melts. Wait 8-10 seconds for it to cool down.
STEP 4
Fill a straw with your favorite spice leaving some room at the top. This was a messy process
STEP 5
Grab the other open end with the needle nose pliers and run the flame back and forth a few times until it’s sealed. Wait 8-10 seconds for it to cool down.
STEP 6 (OPTIONAL)
Label each of your spices so you don’t confuse them when you’re using them.
STEP 7
Load up your container(s) with your spices and get traveling!
