How to Track Storms with the Most Reliable Weather App

We all know the weather you get can make or break a trip! That’s why we constantly check the weather before and during a trip to be prepared for any scenario.

We’ve used a wide range of weather apps out there for our travels, which haven’t given us the details we needed. Our conversations typically go like this:

Esther: Scattered thunderstorms today.
Jacob: Ok, what time?
Esther: 12PM-7PM. *shrug
Jacob: Can you check the radar to see where they’re gonna be?
Esther: I don’t know. I picked the closest city, and I can’t tell what’s going on.
Jacob: …….

It’s always frustrating when we get out to our destination and the weather is completely different, or worse, if we decide to stay in and we later see on instagram that it had been a perfect day!

While we were in Yellowstone National Park this past summer, we had the hardest time working around the weather there. Forecasts showed thunderstorms every single day, but we knew that the park is huge and that some areas wouldn’t be affected. It was just a matter of figuring out which areas. Turns out we’re pretty bad at guessing. There were a couple times we got stuck out on the trails in massive lightning storms and found ourselves sprinting back towards shelter. They say you have a higher chance of winning the lottery than getting struck by lightning, but I was convinced it was coming after us.

Recently, Storm by Weather Underground reached out to us about their app, which is touted the best app for the worst weather. We’ve used almost every weather app out there and still haven’t found an app that meets all our needs, so we wanted to see what made this one different. Right off the bat, you’ll see that Storm shows you more details. I love the layered radar map where you can select what you want to see: lighting, storm tracks, snow cover, wind speed, wind streams, temperature, water temperature, weather stations, etc.

The Past / Future settings to help predict the weather and shows you the direction, strength, and type of storm. When it comes to sharing the info with your friends, they have a drawing and ruler tool to help you pinpoint what you are trying to share. Once you really get to know an area, you can get as detailed as actually selecting the weather tower you get your information from!

We’ve been talking a lot about storm chasing too! How awesome would it be to be able to shoot lighting or even tornadoes (from a safe distance, of course)?! It’s not something we’d go do on our own quite yet. Any pros want to take us on our first trip? Though this app is definitely made to help you avoid bad weather, it can also help you chase it down as well. You can view lighting 100 miles around your selected location, and set alerts for any specific details you want.

Storm is already the goto app for boaters, aviators, and rescue workers, and we’re excited that we can now use it for our travel and photography! We’ll keep you updated if we have any other feedback as we continue to use it. Meanwhile, it’s a free app, so be sure to go check it out here and let us know what you think!

What weather apps do you currently use? What information are you looking for when you check for weather?
