Best Portable Wifi for Travel

Whenever we travel overseas, one of the most common questions we ask is “is there free wifi here?” Anyone else? There would be times we would pick places to eat or hotels based on the wifi situation, but even then, you never know if it will be reliable.

We have friends who buy local SIM cards or turn on an international plan using their providers, but we rarely do that when abroad. Plus lately, there are new options to get wifi hotspots that work overseas. When RoamingMan reached out to us, we were more than happy to test it out!

How to Stay Connected to the Internet While Traveling

When we received our RoamingMan in the mail, it came in a nice case with instructions and a charging cable that plugs into any standard USB. When it came to packing, I ended up using the case to keep the device and many of my other charging cables organized.

How it Works

RoamingMan works just like a hotspot and connects to local carriers on its own. Ideally, it will be finding you a 4G connection, but if it can’t find a solid connection, it will default to 3G.

The interface is simple and straight forward. Once you turn it on, it looks for a signal to connect to and will let you know once it finds one. The wifi name and password are right on the home page (they also include it on a sticker on the outside of the device), and it also tells you how much data you’ve used already. Note: their newer devices

Other than that, there’s not much you need to know. Once it’s up and running, you can connect up to 5 devices to it so you don’t have to worry about fighting over the one phone that has service or constantly looking for a local wifi connection.

The device itself can even be used as a power bank when you’re low on juice on your phone!

Roamingman Data & Specs

The data is unlimited, but you are limited to 500 MB of high-speed internet a day (most other companies only give you 350 MB). For travel, that works out if you’re using it to get around, do research, social media, and checking your email.

In some countries, FUP (Fair Use Policy) may be applied when an individual user has exceeded a certain amount of data within a specified time period, so if you’re hoping to stream movies or do large uploads or downloads, you may want to look for something else.

After you reach your daily limit, you still have connectivity, but it may drop down to 256 kbps download speeds. Once you’re on the next day, it will automatically bump back up to the high speeds for the first 500 MB. They are very transparent about this and you’re able to monitor your usage to see how close you are getting to that 500 MB.

For those of you who want more of the technical specs, you get 150 Mbps of downloading and 50 Mbps of uploading on 4G speeds. If 3G is the best connection available, you’ll get 42 Mbps download and 11 Mbps upload.

They currently cover 68 countries including the most popular destinations and are doing testing in more to widen their coverage. In terms of size, you can see how it compares to an iPhone 7 in these photos.

How Much Does it Cost?

You can rent the RoamingMan for $9.99 per day (or as low as $3.25/day with certain plans) to keep all your devices connected and not worry about overage charges or figuring out how to connect in each place you visit. It’s really easy to order and they get you the device two days before your departure day so you have time to make sure it’s charged. Afterward, they’ve already included a return label so it’s easy to send it back.

If you’re looking to stay connected while overseas, this is a great way to do it, especially if you’re traveling with multiple people. You can go reserve one for your future trip here.

So far, it’s been amazing! It’s one less thing to worry about when we work and travel.
